The Village Cohousing Community is Madison's first complete cohousing project. It is located on Mound, South Mills Street and St. James Court in the Greenbush neighborhood.  Designed by award winning Design Coalition of Madison construction was completed in 1999. There are 18 units in all, 15 in three newly constructed buildings and three in two existing houses on half of a  city block.

Cohousing combines personal privacy and community living. Private, owner-occupied living units are combined with extensive shared common facilities, such as a kitchen and dining area for regular and community meals, a playroom for children, laundry facilities, guest rooms and garden space. All units are fully equipped with their own kitchens. Residents manage cohousing projects, the grounds and facilities.

Village Cohousing Community is close to the University of Wisconsin, Edgewood College, parks and schools.

Village Cohousing Community Mission Statement

We choose to live in cohousing so that we may nurture ourselves, each other, our relationships with neighbors and the wider community.

We create and sustain our village with a sense of practicality and aesthetics - in ways that express a sense of place and an intention to live in harmony with the environment.

We strive to live in ways that nourish the spirit of community, yet respect individual needs for privacy.

We seek to: reflect and respect diversity; to honor our connections to the land and locale; to make decisions in general by consensus; to negotiate differences in a principled fashion; and to share the daily and weekly work of keeping things going.

We believe that the creation of this community is a process that is evolving and will continually evolve as we evolve as we grow and learn from one another.
